Class of 2013

A winner from the start – Don Schumacher has captured success as a driver, car owner and businessman. Schumacher is drag-racing royalty with 5 NHRA event titles as a driver and 13 NHRA world championships as an owner.

His first stint in the NHRA would have been enough accomplishment for anyone. Don won five NHRA national event titles, including the 1970 U.S. Nationals. Schumacher was the victor in about 70 percent of the 560 match races he took part in from 1968 through 1974.

He also won the 1972 Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars Championship for Funny Cars, nine International Hot Rod Association event titles and the 1973 American Hot Rod Association World Championship.

Schumacher left the sport in 1974 with the family business, Schumacher Electric Corporation, needing his full-time involvement.

But upon his return to drag racing in 1997, a 23-year hiatus proved not to be an obstacle as Don Schumacher Racing hit its stride mightily. Since Don’s return, Don Schumacher Racing has totaled 13 NHRA world championships, including son Tony Schumacher’s 8 titles. DSR captured its 200th event title in March 2013.

On top of being a force to be reckoned with as a driver and owner, Schumacher has made strides at making drag-racing safer. Don has been responsible for cutting-edge innovations such as a roof-mounted escape hatch that allows drives to escape an in-car fire and a mounted lever to activate a fire suppressor that allows drag-racers to keep a hand on the wheel.

Schumacher was a pioneer in merging the business world with drag-racing with sponsor partnerships.
