However, if you’re planning to visit during a special race weekend, the hours extend to accommodate the influx of fans. For instance, from April 20 to April 23, the museum has extended hours, opening as early as 8:00 AM and closing as late as 6:00 PM, except for Sunday when it closes at 2:00 PM.

Admission costs are reasonable, with adult tickets at $15.00, while seniors and military personnel enjoy a discounted rate of $12.00. Children under 12 can explore for just $7.00, making it a family-friendly destination.

Touring the Hall of Fame

The museum tour is self-guided, allowing you to take in the exhibits at your own pace. It typically takes about an hour to complete, but if you’re the type who likes to delve deep into the history and details of the exhibits, you might find yourself spending up to three hours.

The IMHOF is not just about the shiny cars and trophies; it also houses the McCaig-Wellborn Motorsports Research Library. Open on weekdays, it has a vast collection of over 14,000 volumes of motorsports literature, possibly the most comprehensive archive of its kind.

For groups of 25 or more, special tours can be arranged by calling the IMHOF, adding a personalized touch to the experience.

Educational Opportunities

The IMHOF is not only a haven for racing fans but also a hub of learning for educational institutions. Special rates are offered for school field trips, making it an exciting educational outing for students of all ages. It’s a unique way to learn about history, science, and technology through the lens of motorsports.

The Foundation of the IMHOF

Understanding the significance of the IMHOF is to appreciate the visionaries who made it a reality. The dream for such a museum was conceived in the late 1960s by NASCAR founder William H.G. “Bill” France Sr. The facility’s foundation stone was laid in 1981, and since its inauguration in 1983, the IMHOF has been a sanctuary for motorsports heritage.

On July 25, 1990, the first inductees, comprising 20 legends from the global motorsports community, were enshrined. The following day marked the opening of a new 15,000-square-foot building designed to honor their achievements. This momentous occasion was the culmination of years of dedication and support from numerous individuals and leaders within the motorsports and local communities.

Exhibits and Collections

Today, the IMHOF is home to an incredible array of historic vehicles from various racing domains such as stock cars, open-wheel, NHRA, road racing, and motorcycles, to name a few. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated to celebrate the diverse history of motorsports.

Moreover, the facility pays homage to other significant contributors to racing history through various Halls of Fame, including the ARCA Hall of Fame and the Alabama Racing Pioneers Hall of Fame. It also celebrates achievements in motorsports journalism with the Henry T. McLemore Motorsports Journalism Award.
